Volume One begins with a brief description of the roots of the contemporary Jewish world and its ideological divisions; discusses the nature and the history of anti-Semitism and its specific forms in Russia; describes the great Jewish migration from the Pale of Settlement to the United States at the turn of the 20th century; shared roots but the vastly different fates of American and Soviet Jewry; and the destruction of Jewish national life in the Soviet Union.
