“Special Thanks To Roy
London”
- Final credit on Garry Shandling's 'The Larry Sanders
Show'
“I have to thank my acting coach,
Roy London.”
Geena Davis, accepting her Academy Award.
“This is for Roy London.”
Brad Pitt, accepting his Golden Globe.
“Thank you, Roy London.”
Sharon Stone, accepting her Golden Globe.
All of us hope for a great teacher to inspire, provoke, energize
and guide us. Roy London was that and more to a community
of actors. Synthesizing techniques from many acting schools,
Roy London emerged in the Eighties as a profound new influence
in Los Angeles. With a focus on film acting and results --
and with no time for psychobabble, his reputation exploded.
Actors began to flock first to his house, and then to his
classes.
'Special Thanks To Roy London' is the only film available
on the life and work of the man who Monsters & Critics
called ‘One of the most influential drama coaches of
the latter 20th Century.’
In interviews with over 50 people (including Sharon Stone,
Geena Davis, Hank Azaria, Jeff Goldblum, Elizabeth Berkley,
Forest Whitaker, Famke Janssen, Patrick Swayze, Garry Shandling,
Beverly D'Angelo and Patricia Arquette) this documentary traces
Roy London’s life from his appearance in LIFE magazine
as a 5 year old mathematics genius, through his time with
Joe Chaiken's Open Theater, his studies with Uta Hagen and
his successes as a young playwright in New York.
But the film's real focus is on the actors who coached
with Roy and the behind the scene stories they share -- and
with never-before-seen footage of Roy London.
Chapters include “Use What Is Happening In Your Life
Today”; “Living In The Extraordinary”; and
“There Is No Correct in Film Acting.” There is
a chapter on Roy’s incalculable influence on women “I
Want That Man’s Part”; and an extended chapter
on Roy London’s involvement with Garry Shandling’s
‘The Larry Sanders Show’.
But Special Thanks To Roy London is not just for
actors – the tools and attitudes described are universal
for anyone working in the creative arts – indeed it
was notable that writers, directors and producers also came
to Roy’s classes to hear what he had to say.
Premiered to glowing reviews, Special Thanks To Roy London
is a documentary that you will want to own and watch several
times.
"I want to watch it before every audition
- it's like having a refresher course with Roy." - Arye Gross
